“Quality ... you know what it is, yet you don't know what it is.” - Robert M. Pirsig
Stare at enough images or read enough text generated by AI and you start recognizing a distinct “AI-quality” to these artifacts. There’s something there. Once you see it it’s undeniable. And yet: when you try to define it, do put words to what sets this AI-quality apart from human quality, you find that you can’t - because quality is something we know is there, but at the same time can’t know!
Join designer, educator, and philosopher Morten Rand-Hendriksen on a journey of discovery as he draws on classical works from Aristotle, Heidegger, Pirsig and more to provide a modern framework for product, design, and rediscovering our humanity in the age of AI by understanding the hostile-sounding but imminently practical Metaphysics of Quality.
In Pirsig’s novel “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” the author experiences a psychotic break trying to define quality. In this talk, Morten (currently on his tenth reading of the book) will use his neurodivergent superpowers to bring clarity to Pirsig’s dilemma and answer the question at the heart of every designer’s work:
“What the hell is Quality? What is it?”
